In France, carpoolers are insured by the driver's civil liability which covers passenger's physical and material damages. Moreover, if it is a journey to work in France, drivers and passengers are covered under travel accident, that is to say, it provides access to the same rights as a work accident.
In France, you should know as well that the common law of insurance home-work scheme also covers reasonable detours made in order to pick up or drop off passengers . It must be proven that the driver was on his way to work and he just made a detour for his passenger . The inscription on our carpool services can serve as proof.
Other insurance can also provide more comfort but are not legally mandatory in France. The most common in France is the "family" insurance. As a passenger , you can for example cause damage to your driver's vehicle. In this case, in France, you can bring in the family insurance.
"For a ""personal"" trip (eg home and work) , the driver can not make any profit on his/her trip . In France, He/she therefore can not receive compensation greater than the contribution to costs depending on the tax rate in effect (between 0.30 € and 0.60 € per kilometer in 2015) . Otherwise, it may be considered as paid transport of persons, activity being subject to professional insurances and special tax and regulatory framework, driver's civil liability insurance is no longer involved. In other countries, you should check the legislation on this subject..
In France, the proposal of € 0.08 per km is based on the division by four of € 0.32 and protects you from all problems related to taxes or insurance. It also represents more or less the sharing of petrol costs. Proposals equivalent to that amount are proposed in other currencies, but it is the driver's responsibility to check the legislation on this subject.
In France, about the detour made made to pick up a passenger , the driver can apply without any concern 0.30 € / km on the distance involved..
